Pool of Young Experts: Davor Džakula, Serbia
Collaboration across borders
One of the most valuable things I’ve learned is that solutions to global challenges require multiple perspectives. Engaging with peers from different countries and disciplines has expanded my understanding of peace and security beyond the Western Balkans. Through these exchanges, I have gained insights into how climate change impacts security, how digital threats shape the future of conflict, and how youth engagement varies across political contexts. Despite our diverse backgrounds, we share a common drive—to create a better, safer, and more inclusive future.
A platform for change
The Pool of Young Experts is more than just a network—it is a space where knowledge meets action. It ensures that youth voices are not just heard but taken seriously in decision-making processes. Coming from the Western Balkans, I understand the need for initiatives like this one. The Pool of Young Experts bridges gaps between different regions, cultures, and lived experiences, fostering collaboration to create sustainable solutions.
My decision to join was driven by my belief that young people must have a seat at the table in shaping policies on peace, security, and sustainability. Having worked in youth cooperation, environmental peacebuilding, and regional development, I saw this initiative as an opportunity to amplify my voice and of those who share the same vision. Expertise is not just about academic credentials but also about lived experience, and this platform allows us to bring both to the table.
Young people as changemakers
Being a young expert means constantly learning, adapting, and finding ways to contribute to discussions where young voices are often overlooked. My advice to peers starting their careers is simple: be bold, stay curious, and never underestimate the power of your own voice. Surround yourself with people who challenge and inspire you, seek mentorship, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Most importantly, don’t wait for permission to contribute—find your way to make an impact.
Young people bring energy, innovation, and an ability to think beyond traditional frameworks. Whether through grassroots activism, academic research, or policy engagement, we have the potential to drive change at both local and global levels.
Young people are not just the future—they are the present. Our engagement, ideas, and actions today will define the trajectory of peace and security efforts for years to come. The Pool of Young Experts proves that when young people are given a seat at the table, they bring perspectives that challenge outdated approaches and push for innovative solutions.
